VPN for any job or professional related duties or functions. The
decision to utilize the VPN for business purposes is solely up to
the employee/user and their supervisor. Shands HealthCare shall have
absolutely no liability including without limitation, any liability
for damage to your personal computer hardware, data, information,
materials and/or business resulting from the installation and usage
of necessary third party VPN software on a non-Shands owned machine.
This page provides you some information about Virtual Private Network
(VPN).
What is a VPN?
Virtual Private Network - A wire connecting two endpoints is a
physical, private network; a virtual private network is created
using logical configurations in two endpoint devices, to simulate a
private network, over a public medium (e.g. Internet). Data is
encrypted to prevent prying eyes, authenticated to verify identity,
and protected to defend against tampering.
Virtual
Networking as if you were directly connected to the SHANDS Network.
Private
Encrypted Data, such that the data cannot be spoofed, sniffed or
otherwise modified while traversing the Internet.
Network
A method of connecting multiple computers to exchange information.

Do I really need to use the VPN?
Answer: If you need to access confidential and protected information from home or any remote location, you must use the VPN. VPN is not needed for email access, simply start your browser and point it to: https://webmail.shands.ufl.edu to access email remotely.

Can I surf the Internet through the VPN?
Answer: Only traffic destined for the Shands/UF network will be tunneled through the secure tunnel. Internet traffic not destined for these networks will not be encrypted by the
VPN.

What can I do with a VPN?
Answer: The VPN provides an authenticated, secure tunnel to the
Shands network. It does not provide file access or applications
access, and will not provide access to your workstation desktop.
Any applications that you need to run will need to be locally
installed on your home pc by you (Groupwise, HostEx, etc).

How do I get the software necessary to connect through the VPN?
Answer: Authorized users can simply download the VPN client software, (http://extranet.shands.org/vpn). Remember, you must have an authorized user account in order to access the download page.

What are the personal PC requirements?
Answer: A home computer running Windows 2000/XP or Vista and a DSL or Cable Modem connection.

Answer: Once you have your supervisors confirmation that your organizational role permits access, complete the on-line application.
